Oh Philly!

I made it to Philly! I flew out of Bangor this morning at 7 am and have been going non-stop all day today. I have been at what the Peace Corps calls 'staging'. Staging is where all the people in your volunteer class come together to do initial intake paperwork and important pre-departure talks before leaving tomorrow for Uganda. There are 45 other volunteers in my class: an equal number of boys and girls with a mix of ages from 22 to 50 years of age. Everyone here is so nice, positive and driven - it's a great group to be around.

I learned a lot about the Peace Corps today - history, facts and information on Uganda Peace Corps in particular. I will be sure to post more information when my brian is a little more relaxed!

I leave Tuesday morning for JFK at 3 am and I finally make it to Uganda at 12:05pm (eastern time) which is 7:05 pm in Uganda on Wednesday the 11th. I will be walking into about 70 degree heat and the middle of their rainy season.

I'm excited for this opportunity and sad all at the same time, but I know that I will learn so much, grow as a person and cherish this experience and the relationships I will be making.

Good night all and when I talk with you next I will be in Africa!

  5. Okay, this is my first crack at posting on someone's blog. Oy. I can hardly believe that you've been in the Pearl of Africa for almost a week! How many photos have you taken already?? Can you post pictures on a blog? We love you,

    Kathryn

p.s. On an unrelated note the two pairs of black shoes in the Muddy Rudder butler's closet cupboard where everyone sticks their purses are about to be sent to Goodwill. Try not to fall over from shock.

  8. Were it not for Monsieur LeClerc I would not have been able to post a comment on your blog because between my last comment and this one I forgot how to do it. Argh. I hope that the sun is shining on you (it's shining here) and that you're figuring things out in the Pearl o' Africa. I also hope that you're taking a ton of pictures.

Bella is almost 40 pounds; Jeff is playing freshman football; Kristina is about to start classes at UMaine; and the pickling cucumbers and yellow tiny tomatoes are ripe in the garden. The goldenrod is blooming and the sun is setting earlier. Plus, LA is hammering the Red Sox. I'm not sure that last part is news (hee hee).

Take care of yourself and keep track of your moments.

    Love, love, love,

    Kathryn

  10. Okay, quit stalking hippos and update this blog, woman!

School starts tomorrow; Kristina started class today at UM; the puppy weighs 44 pounds; I weigh much more than that!; the temperature today topped out at--are you ready for this??--96!--and the Folk Festival was, well, folky. I sucked down a blueberry smoothie for you. Looooooooooooove yooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu!
